How to evaluate sperm plasma membrane integrity/viability

Camilo Hernandez-Aviles is an Assistant Professor of Equine Theriogenology at the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University. He received his DVM degree from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (National University of Colombia), his PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Texas A&M University, and completed a Residency in Equine Theriogenology, also at Texas A&M University. He is a Diplomate in the American College of Theriogenologists. His clinical and research interests are mostly focused on stallion reproduction and assisted reproductive technologies in horses. Some of these include the study of stallion sperm physiology during fertilization, the use of molecular biology techniques for studying sperm function and stallion fertility, the validation of flow cytometry-based techniques for stallion sperm analysis in clinical settings, the effects of semen extender components and storage methods on the quality of cool-stored and frozen/thawed stallion sperm, and the diagnosis and management of reproductive conditions in stallions.
